HUNTER BOCCIA:
After months of training at the Club on Wednesdays - achieved with the wonderful assistance from members of the Ladies Bowls Group - 5 members of Hunter Boccia competed in the NSW Boccia State Titles held in Narrabeen from 13-15 January 2012.
Being a Paralympic sport, the members competed under different classifications.
Phil Bates, who was only introduced to Boccia during 2011 played strongly to overcome fierce opposition in the open class and achieve 5th place.
Three of our athletes competed in the BC3 (ramp) category.
While none managed to make it through to the final series held on Sunday, Wendy Evans came back from an injury that kept her out of the 2011 competition season to come an incredibly respectable 3rd in her pool.
High school students Claire Bertholli and Siobhan Daley both came 4th in their respective pools.
In her first major competition, Claire played brilliantly to win an end against the ultimate BC3 gold medal winner (who has been playing for more years than Claire has been alive).
Siobhan not only got her official Paralympic classification but also managed to win an end against the reigning number 1 BC3 player in Australia (who is also ranked number 52 in the world).
But the star that shone brightest on Sunday was BC1 athlete Aletia Pepperall who has worked hard on improving her long distance game over the past year with the reward coming in the form of a well-deserved silver medal.
With the Boccia NSW Committee currently making selections for NSW squad to compete at the Boccia National Titles to be held in Narrabeen from 30 April to 3 May, Aletia is hoping that the obvious improvements to her game will result in a call-up to the state team.
